More and more parents are allowing their children to play on computers and tablets as they think that children should learn technology skills. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

A growing number of parents are permitting their teenagers to use tablets and computers for playing games with the perception that young people must acquire modern technical abilities. I believe there are more harmful implications of this trend than any perceived benefits.

First of all, game-based activities are a new trend in learning methods. Nowadays, many edutech companies are using technology to impart learning among learners. It is known as gamification. Scientifically, it has been proven that gamification activities allow children to learn concepts faster and effectively. Thus, using computers and tablets become necessary to learn from gamification. Secondly, using computing devices allows children to gain knowledge of emerging technologies worldwide. It allows them to be familiar with such technologies right from a tender age. It will give them a competitive edge over those who did not use computers or tablets in their early years.

On the downside, this trend promotes isolation and loneliness among young people, which is not good. They may lose opportunities to develop social relationships and team building which could be better acquired from conventional and physical sports with their peers. In addition, there is growing proof that it can have unfavourable health impacts. A research study in the media declares that it can harm a child’s eyes when looking at screens for long periods. Studies also suggest that children using these devices might have more trouble sleeping, which is crucial for psychological advancement.

In conclusion, the limitations of allowing children to use tablets and computer systems outweigh the associated benefits. It is a kind of preparing for uncertain future skills which are paid for with the sacrifice of well-being, socialisation and not pursuing their passion.
